10 Keys to Networking Authentically

I spent years networking authentically before I realized my approach had a name–authentic networking. Authentic networking refers to building genuine, mutually beneficial professional relationships based on trust, shared interests, and reciprocity, rather than solely focusing on personal gain or transactional interactions.

If you don’t like networking, give authentic networking a try. Here are some key aspects of authentic networking:

  1. Genuine connections: Focusing on creating real, meaningful relationships rather than just collecting contacts.
  2. Value exchange: Offering help, insights, or resources to others without always expecting immediate returns.
  3. Active listening: Showing genuine interest in others’ experiences, challenges, and goals.
  4. Honesty and transparency: Being open about your own goals, strengths, and limitations.
  5. Long-term perspective: Building relationships over time rather than seeking quick, transactional benefits.
  6. Shared interests: Connecting with people based on common professional or personal interests.
  7. Authenticity: Being true to yourself and your values in your interactions.
  8. Follow-through: Keeping promises and following up on commitments made during networking interactions.
  9. Diverse connections: Expanding your network beyond your immediate industry or circle to gain fresh perspectives.
  10. Continuous engagement: Maintaining and nurturing relationships over time, not just when you need something.

Authentic networking aims to create a supportive professional community where members help each other grow, share opportunities, and collaborate effectively. This approach often leads to more satisfying and productive professional relationships compared to more superficial networking strategies.
