Many of us choose to become medical writers because we truly enjoy writing. However, working in medical communications involves managing multiple tasks and responsibilities, which can divert our attention from the very act of writing.
Admittedly, I have fallen into this trap. When I have a lot to do, completing tasks on my to-do list is easier than immersing myself in the writing process, which needs my full attention. However, I try to keep in mind the importance of being intentional in my writing.
I’m pleased to share some tips that have helped me establish good writing habits and get motivated when I’m feeling stuck!
Take small steps. Taking just a small step in the writing process can lead to progress, even when you’re not feeling very motivated. Developing a writing plan, even with limited time, is a great way to begin. Having a plan allows you to divide the tasks into smaller, manageable parts and makes the workload feel less overwhelming.
Schedule time for writing every week. It can be a challenge to start writing, even though I am fully aware of the deadlines. To overcome this, I schedule specific time slots during the week and make sure I stick to them. If I’m short on time, I set time aside for writing every day. Consistency is crucial for productivity!
Write when you feel rested. I prefer to write in the mornings because I feel more rested and refreshed when I first wake up and, especially, after coffee and breakfast. However, this may differ from person to person. Do what’s best for you and your work schedule!
Capture ideas as they come. Make sure to have your phone or a notebook with you because ideas (and even full sentences) can strike at any moment – even during a peaceful nature walk!
Consider blogging (or journalling) to reignite motivation. I’ve had conversations with fellow writers about the importance of writing about hobbies and interests in the past. Writing my blog, for instance, helps me view writing as a fun and low-stress activity. Plus, blogging lets me engage with readers and is a great way to improve my communication skills.
Read! Delving into a book, article, or blog (in any field or area!) can help writers recharge but also broaden their vocabulary, boost concentration, and refine grammar and syntax skills. Additionally, it can spark creativity by introducing us to diverse writing styles and ideas.
Connect with others. Building relationships with other professionals allows us to share our concerns, alleviate stress, and rekindle motivation. In our mini blog post, Health Writing: Who Is Part of Your Team, we highlight how staying connected with team members can help writers.
