Health Writing: Who Is Part of Your Team?

Writing is commonly perceived as a solitary endeavor, but it frequently entails teamwork and collaborative efforts at various stages of the process. These stages include brainstorming ideas, designing visuals, editing, and ultimately publishing a health article.

When embarking on a new project, understanding the roles of your team members and collaborating with them efficiently will not only enhance your writing and facilitate the publication of your work, but also establish a culture of support and foster enduring professional connections.

As a health writer, whether you work in-house or as a freelancer, you will collaborate with several team members.

Editors typically supervise a health writing project from start to finish. They facilitate all tasks and communications between writers and other team members, serving as the primary point of contact throughout the writing and publication processes. They are responsible for collecting feedback and comments from other team members and conveying them to the writer of the piece during the editing and proofreading phases.

Graphic designers are responsible for creating visual artwork that depicts the ideas and topics discussed in a health article. Their level of collaboration with writers may vary. They can either independently create artwork or take a writer’s suggestions to develop specific graphics.

Copy editors meticulously review every submitted health article for grammar, spelling, and inconsistencies in tone and style. In addition to proofreading and querying writers to ensure clarity and accuracy, they may also be responsible for fact-checking. Certain publications may even employ dedicated fact checkers, such as medical professionals or subject matter experts, who thoroughly assess the accuracy of a writer’s work.
