How to Enter the Field of Medical Communication (Webinar Recap)

A few months ago, Kelly and I presented a webinar on how to enter the field of medical communications.

We had a great time discussing key steps, strategies, and our personal experiences as we began our journeys and built our careers.

• Medical communication is a large and diverse field and functions as an umbrella that includes medical writing and editing, but also several career paths. Reflecting on what specialty you want to pursue is an essential first step in the process.
• Assessing skills and interests before deciding on a specialty is a key step for beginners, along with exploring the advantages and disadvantages of working freelance versus working for an employer full time.
• Joining professional associations and networking by attending conferences and local events, along with maintaining an active presence on LinkedIn are also highly encouraged. These avenues not only help you build valuable connections but also keep you informed about the latest industry trends and job opportunities.
• Coaching is something you should consider as you step into this field. A career coach can guide you in assessing your skills and closing any skill gaps, setting career goals, creating a personalized professionals plan, and finding professional opportunities. When you’re trying to break into a new field you have a lot to do, and many of these activities are difficult to initiate by yourself.

Entering and thriving in the medical communication field requires both preparation and perseverance. Whether you’re looking for internships or full-time roles, gaining relevant experience and staying proactive in your networking efforts are crucial steps. With the right resources and mindset, this field offers many fulfilling career potentials.
