While many clients of freelance writers and editors encourage the use of generative AI, others might still be wary of it.
Two of my clients recently drafted and shared policies that explicitly prohibit its use for content creation, which means that as freelancers we can’t use generative AI tools for outlining, writing, or substantive editing. Their concerns about originality, factual accuracy, and ethical transparency are certainly valid, but this doesn’t mean AI is completely off the table.
AI can still offer behind-the-scenes support that respects client policies, when used carefully and transparently.
Here are some of the ways you can use it without generating content.
Grammar and Spelling
AI-powered grammar and spelling tools can streamline editing and help polish work without generating new content. These tools function more like advanced spellcheckers than ghostwriters and are generally acceptable even under strict guidelines. Always check with your clients before using them though!
SEO Optimization
AI can also assist in SEO optimization. Some tools can enhance content performance without actually writing the content itself, from identifying relevant keywords to suggesting improved meta descriptions or headline structures.
Research
Research is another area AI can help with. Writers can use AI tools to identify recent studies and credible sources on a given topic. While AI shouldn’t be the final word on facts (remember to always fact check!), its use can speed up the process of finding research leads, freeing up time for reading, deeper verification, and analysis.
Generative AI can’t replace real people, but it can assist with identifying leaders, clinicians, academics, and journalists who are relevant in a particular field. Just keep in mind that AI can blatantly lie, so always dig deeper to ensure that the person is an expert in your area of interest!
Writers and editors can still leverage AI’s strengths for analysis, optimization, and support without crossing ethical or contractual boundaries. As always, human judgment, fact-checking, and creativity remain essential. By treating AI as a tool rather than a replacement, professionals can work smarter while still respecting the trust their clients place in them.
